Beijing
Beijing, one of the "Four Great Ancient Capitals of China," is the current capital of the People's Republic of China, and the largest city of northern China. With 17 million under its jurisdiction, it is second only to Shanghai in population. It is everything one would expect of the modern center of China in matters such as politics, communications, transportation and show-cases like the Olympics (2008). It is also famous for the Forbidden City of Emperors from the early 1400s until 1912, their Temple of Heaven, and Tiananmen Square. Much of the city has been rebuilt in China's headlong dash into modernity, but some of the old housing still exists along the narrow lanes called Hutongs.
